Cyrano De Bergerac *s Kenneth Branagh

(4.6 stars; 38 reviews)

By Edmond Rostand in Anthony Burgess's verse translation, Cyrano de Bergerac is set in 17th-century France and tells the story of Cyrano, a dashing Gascon soldier who acts as the ghost-writer for Christian de Neuvillette, helping him win the heart of the beautiful Roxane through exquisite love poems.

This adaptation for radio, produced by Nicolas Soames and directed by David Timson, features a talented cast including Jodhi May as Roxane and Tom Hiddleston as Christian. The production captures not only the passion and poetry of the play but also the humor that runs throughout.

Achingly Beautiful

There were multiple passages where I couldn't help pacing around the room in an agony of tortured suspense. And the sheer radiance of the language - I was shocked to discover afterward that it was a mere translation of the source material. I mean, this is some of the purest poetry I've ever been blessed to discover - a positive revelation: not a whit beneath Shakespeare! (And I adore Shakespeare, believe me.)

I enjoy the performances, but I'm cutting out early, I don't find the story compelling. But that's just me.
