The story begins with a storm outside an old house and stormy scenes inside between the house’s occupants. It details the eventful life of Zoe Blount, including her involvement in a mystery and her place in a complicated family history. It also follows the course of her romantic attachment and sympathetically portrays her suffering as a result of sexual double standards. The characters’ experiences, particularly within marriage, depict changing ideas of gender roles and relationships in the beginning years of the twentieth century. - Summary by Newgatenovelist (5 hr 13 min)

Reviews

wonderful reader is Newgatenovelist

(4 stars)

Per usual I am listening to half a dozen librivox books. I've only come to chapter 11 here. At first I thought this would be an easy "the butler did it". Yet I am thinking of the mysterious ms. money, who the "grand" dead man "adopted" as a girl. I hope to find out what she is all about. Although she may not be a major a component of the climax, I am still interested into why the mentally retarded girl was adopted and whether or not she is a blood relation

Bad Recoding

(3 stars)

The narrator is wonderful but the recording equipment used has a vey, very noticeable echo. Such a shame as I wanted to listen to this book.

Reader trying to be "artistic"

Just read the book lady. We dont need added effects. A few minutes after the start begins the echo, which I supose was intended to sound ghostly. The breathy thing was already borderline, but the echo is just intrusive and absolute crap.
