(4.3 stars; 18 reviews)

The collection of short stories - of which The Prussian Officer is one - was Lawrence’s first such book. A German officer and his orderly are the focus of the piece and, while socially the superior of his orderly, the officer demonstrates his is the distinctly baser character. Critiques

homoeroticism & violence in classic short story

(4 stars)

Lawrence at his urgent and vivid finest. Repressed and agonised feelings an officer has for his handsome young footman turn him into a cruel bully. But the aristocratic arrogance of the Prussian officer knows little of the explosive reaction his oppressive behaviour will provoke. Clearly and well read.

Right on Target

(5 stars)

The reader has precisely the right voice for this kind of novel. Her's is a pleasant and strong voice, which she uses to express the story with the perfect amount of seriousness and clarity it requires.

Well read
