Janet of the Dunes

Read by Roger Melin

(4.6 stars; 53 reviews)

Known primarily for her children's books, Harriet T. Comstock would occasionally depart from that genre and showcase her writing talent in adult prose as well. Janet of the Dunes is one such departure wherein she masterfully takes us into the lives of the bold men and women who tended those life saving stations along the seaboard which many a ship relied upon for their safety. They were simple people, large of heart and as close-knit as a tiny community can and must ever be, and they, above all else, took their duties very seriously. The story revolves primarily around Janet and her "Cap'n Billy Daddy" and how their lives and their devotion to one another are touched by the others within the small circle of people of the dunes, the hills, and the light. A Wonderful Gift

(5 stars)

God bless you for this and the many other great examples your gift for reading has benefitted me and, I know, many more. As a combat veteran and a widower I live alone and your readings have many times chased away the shadows of awful scenes I can never forget. When the sadness of those days almost overcome me I listen to Jeeves and Bertie talk with your voice and I thank God for you and all of the other volunteers who give so freely of themselves. This was a great story and I would recommend it to anyone and especially with Mr. Melin reading it in his wonderfully expressive manner. Thanks so much.

lovely story!

This is a very fine story about people who do the right thing, even though it is difficult, out of love for others. And also about the natural consequences of doing the wrong thing. It is also an adventure story in its quiet way. I was sorry to see that there aren't more stories on Librevox by this wonderful author.

Salty souls loving well

Probably the fiction I've read this year! Encouraging and uplifting, while looking at a seaside town in all their eccentricities. A commentary on the good things that happen when men love women well. The reader was perfect! I'm going to have my daughter listen in when she's 12 or 13.

I loved the simple innocence of a young woman, which is very refreshing these days! Her love for the man that raised her, even after finding out that he wasn't her father, is so heartwarming! Mr Melin is an amazing reader, he could read anything and make it interesting!!

I loved it!

I would love to hear Roger Melin read more books like this one. The story is enjoyable and encouraging. I've never heard of this author, Harriet T. Comstock, before. I've downloaded from Gutenberg another one of her books to read. Thank you, Libravox and Roger Melin!
