Jock of the Bushveld is a true story by South African author Sir Percy Fitzpatrick when he worked as a storeman, prospector's assistant, journalist and ox-wagon transport-rider. The book tells of Fitzpatrick's travels with his dog, Jock, during the 1880s. Jock was saved by Fitzpatrick from being drowned in a bucket for being the runt of the litter. Good story, well written and well read

It made the story come alive to have readers from South Africa, since they knew the language, accents and terminology. There were a couple of chapters that I thought were long and not as interesting as the rest, but the love of the author for his dog always came through. It is definitely a story for its time and anyone trying to judge it by today's culture regarding hunting would find it hard to read, but it is typical of the time in which it took place. The ending is sad but done well.

After ending my title with a preposition, I'm nobody to criticize. Definitely for dog lovers. The first 2 chapters are no indication of the rest of the book, much of which is either action packed or puts one in the centre of the troubles experienced by the narrator. There are many uses of the n-word and k-word that feels offensive now but it's so matter- of-fact that it does not come across, to a white man, as derogatory but does feel that it's used with colonial supremacy.

enjoyed as much as first read 45 years ago, a view into a era long gone and before pc was invented, life in the south african bushveld
