The Magic City

Philip and Lucy discover that the city Philip has built using toys, books and household objects, has come alive. This is the account of their incredible adventures in those magical lands, where they meet characters from books and history, mythical beasts, and many other nice (and not so nice) people and creatures.

As with all Edith Nesbit's tales, The Magic City has generous helpings of humour, imagination and interesting ideas, as well as the over-arching story of how a boy and girl who have unwillingly become step-brother and sister eventually learn to like each other.

This is a story that works on many levels and will be equally enjoyed by adults and children. (Summary by Ruth Golding) (7 hr 37 min)

This book had everything I love in a good read, a great story, suspence, likable characters and comedy. The reader was awesome, there were alot of characters for her to do and she had alot of voices. great job.

I Really Enjoyed This Book

Not a whole lot of mystery here (my preferred genre) but it is still a neat story. This is an early (IMHO) coming-of-age story. Phillips's sister and dearest friend has abandoned him by getting married. He feels alone, mistreated, and decides, one night, to break the rules and build a grand city out of things around the house. Imagine his surprise when the city comes to life! On top of that, his 'friend' Lucy, who he really doesn't like, ends up missing in the city. Feeling guilty, he embarks on a quest to rescue her and learns some lessons along the way. This book is wonderful, the reader is fabulous and has a very talented voice, and the story is sweet without being mushy. It is worth a listen.

Great reader, better than usual fantasy.

Reminds me of when I was young and still had imagination enough to see shapes in the clouds. The story's somewhat predictable, but as it's written from a child's viewpoint, and more than likely written for children, I'd expect nothing more challenging. I'll be passing this along to my grand nieces and nephews. Once again, Ruth, you have outdone yourself! Thank you for lending your considerable talents to LibriVox. We are all richer for your generosity.

Humorous and charming story about adventure and acceptance of life's changes. Ruth Golding shows some of her best voice acting skills with this wide variety of characters.

It took me so long so to find a audio book that i liked. #Picky Girl! LOL! The first 15mins was a little confusing because i didnt know what was happening. But after that i just couldnt stop listening! And Ruth Goldin is the best reader in the world. Thanks for reading it RG! I hightly recommend this if your a kid-teen or if your listening to this as a family. Thank you for taking the time to read this long review. I hope this helped you decide if you want to listen to this.

I liked it mostly

I liked it because it was adventurous and high-spirited, but I felt like the way it described some things was a bit off, and I thought one thing was a bit disgusting. I liked the way the narrator spoke with accents for the different characters, but I felt like the momentum of the story at the end of the chapters didn't really come in enough. -Lizzie, age 8

Excellent story

Ruth Golding again does a wonderful job reading a delightful story. Don't you wonder what it would be like for one of your "play cities" to become real? And from the sand castles at the shore to the stacks of blocks, everything here has been built by Philip. A very creative and exciting story.
