Sky Island
L. Frank Baum
Gelesen von Judy Bieber

Sky Island (1912) was the second of three titles written by Baum featuring a spunky girl from California, Trot, and her companion, the old sailorman, Capβn Bill. Baum had hoped to end the Oz series in 1910 and the following year he introduced Trot and Capβn Bill in The Sea Fairies. In Sky Island, they journey to an island in the sky by means of an enchanted umbrella belonging to Button Bright, a character who first appeared in The Road to Oz (1909). The trio is then captured by the Boolaroo of the Blues, a monarch who is both comical and dangerous, escape to the country of the βPinksβ, and eventually regain the magic umbrella and return back to earth. This is one of Baumβs best fantasy books and contains enough not-so-veiled commentary on race and politics to interest adults as well. However, it (and The Sea Fairies) did not sell as well as the Oz books and Baum resumed writing them in 1913. He subsequently brought Trot and Capβn Bill to Oz in 1915 in The Scarecrow of Oz. i love it. p.s what idiot has done random letters.
Oz-ish, but not Oz. Good nonetheless.

The second of a series (with The Sea Fairies) featuring Trot and Cap'n Bill. Baum was trying to get away from Oz, but his fans (and disappointing book sales) wouldn't let him. The Oz character Button Bright appears here, but he really seems to be a different character altogether, who just got saddled with the nickname so young Oz fans would recognize something familiar and give the new series a chance. Eventually Baum gave up and just dragged the new characters into Oz (in, I think, The Lost Princess of Oz). Entertaining and imaginative. It's a bit darker and more- bitter, maybe?- than the typical Oz book.
Enjoyed

Fun kid's story with a bit of politics thrown in for the adults. I'm surprised it didn't sell better when it was written. But I suppose people wanted Oz.
Fine

I liked that this book had some new characters. The storyline was a bit hard to follow.
