The Black Moth

(4.4 stars; 68 reviews)

The year is 1752. Devil, the Duke of Andover, and highwayman Jack, the Earl of Wyncham are at odds over a country squire's beautiful daughter. Cheating at cards, the marital problems of the younger sister of the Duke and the younger brother of the Earl, and debts beyond imagination form the backdrop for this romance, Heyer's first work and the only one in the public domain. Highly recommend

The narrator did an excellent job. I will be looking up additional readings by her. Also, although it took a little bit to get into the book, I enjoyed it so much! Although Georgette Heyer wrote this when she was quite young, and perhaps less developed as an author, it was still so fun and enjoyable. Especially as all the elements came together at the end. I would highly recommend the book and the reader!

For some reason I consciously avoided this author as a teenager, being heavily into Jean Plaidy/Victoria Holt. So glad I didn't miss out again 50 years later. Not deep but thoroughly enjoyable.

Heyer juvenilia

(3 stars)

Georgette Heyer was a teenager when she wrote 'The Black Moth', and it shows, so if you are a fan of the sparklingly witty Regency romances she wrote later in her career you will be disappointed here. However, if you are dedicated to Heyer, you will not be surprised to find that she was a natural story-teller from the start. 'The Black Moth' lacks maturity, but it is not without its pleasures, and Sibella Denton is a very pleasant reader.

An Early Action-Filled Romance

(5 stars)

Excellent reader, a somewhat predictable novel, but fun all the same. There are some attitudes and words that reflect that era that will likely strike modern readers as odd or inappropriate. It was a different time, and important to remember where society was in the past. We have made some real gains. Apologies for typos or weird grammer. I cannot see this box as I type.

not my cup of tea

(2 stars)

The reader was pretty good! The novel itself not so much, and I think not just because Heyer was a teenager at the time she wrote this. However, this was the first thing I listened to from her, so maybe it was a bad idea after all. For those liking Heyer, asolutely recommended.

Entertaining and well-read.

An entertaining melodrama with depth, meaning and detailed descriptions. There are several likable characters, and an evil but interesting villain. It reminds me of swashbuckling stories written by Baroness Orczy, such as "Beau Brocade" and "The Laughing Cavalier". Thank you to Sibella Denton for her wonderful reading. I listened to it a second time.

I don’t care how old this writer was when this story was written, it was an entertaining read! Enjoyed it thoroughly. Sibella Denton does a fine job making a story come alive. Thank you LibriVox!
