Have Gun – Will Travel follows Paladin, a highly educated and resourceful gunfighter who works as a hired troubleshooter in the American West. Based at San Francisco’s Hotel Carlton, he accepts requests for help from people facing danger, injustice, or difficult choices. His calling card bears a chess knight and the words “Have Gun – Will Travel,” a concise emblem of his unusual profession.

Each radio story sends Paladin into a new situation, where he must weigh the terms of a job and decide how best to resolve it. He relies on intelligence, negotiation, and knowledge of human nature as much as on his skill with a gun. The Western setting provides a backdrop for conflicts involving law, loyalty, survival, and the consequences of violence.

The series combines adventure with a thoughtful, measured tone. Paladin is neither a simple lawman nor a reckless gun-for-hire: his education, dry wit, and personal code give the stories a distinctive moral edge. The result is a character-driven Western in which the most satisfying outcome may come from judgment and restraint rather than a showdown.
