Crome Yellow, published in 1921 was Aldous Huxley’s first novel. In it he satirizes the fads and fashions of the time. It is the witty story of a house party at ‘Crome’ where there is a gathering of bright young things. We hear some of the history of the house from Henry Wimbush, its owner and self appointed historian; Apocalypse is prophesied, virginity is lost, and inspirational aphorisms are gained in a trance. Our hero, Denis, tries to capture it all in poetry and is disappointed in love.

The author, Aldous Huxley, was born in 1894 and began writing poetry and short stories in his early twenties; this was his first novel and established his literary reputation. (Summary by Martin Clifton) (6 hr 5 min)

The reader was excellent, and the book was really interesting and different. The recording does have a bit of a buzz in the background which can get obnoxious, but overall very good.

Strange book but good idea. A rambling risotto of presumably contemporary conflicting 1920’s ideas & attitudes expressed by the book’s characters who did not seem that authentic tto me ; ( except the extremely shy young man who does not get the girl )so was written as satire supposedly. So was disappointed as was really looking forward it . Robert Musil’s difficult trilogy tackled similar approach to complex, fractured society but with more depth & darkness , I think . I have old copy of huxley’s Point Counterpoint somewhere that I plan to tackle . Very good reader with just the right sonorous voice

A light and fun Huxley with wonderful atmospheric description that puts you right in the scene. And of course Martin's narration is top notch as usual.
