The Mary Lee Taylor Program - Single Episodes
The Mary Lee Taylor Program is known as the longest-running cooking program on radio, beginning on November 7, 1933, on CBS and concluding on October 9, 1954, on NBC. Initially, the CBS episodes were fifteen minutes long, focusing on cooking tips and recipes. After switching to NBC in 1948, the show expanded to thirty minutes and became part of the "NBC Saturday morning parade of stars." The new format included a light domestic drama segment called "The Story of the Week," featuring the young married couple Jim and Sally Carter.
Each episode also included "The Recipe of the Week," emphasizing economical cooking while reminding listeners of the importance of a complete dinner. For instance, a Father's Day meal presented on June 18, 1949, featured braised round steak, fried potatoes, and vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce. The program was sponsored by Pet Milk, which helped keep meal costs low.
The NBC episodes concluded with "Today's Recipe for Happiness," where Mary Lee shared warm, homespun wisdom. Mary Lee was not only a beloved host but also a nutritionist and accomplished chef, making the program both informative and delightful.

Mary Lee Taylor Was A Fictional Character.
llomenzo
Mary Lee Taylor was not a real nutritionist or chef. She was a fictional persona invented by advertising executive Erma Perham Proetz in 1933 to promote PET Evaporated Milk. Proetz herself was not a formally trained chef or credentialed nutritionist; she was a creative copywriter and marketer who ran a PET Milk test kitchen and worked with home economists to develop reliable recipes. The show presented Mary Lee as a “home economist” and cooking expert because that image built trust with homemakers — but it was branding, not an actual person’s professional identity. So while the program’s recipes were professionally tested and the persona was presented as a nutritionist and accomplished cook, the statement “Mary Lee was in fact a nutritionist and an accomplished chef” is not true in reality.

I chose to listen to this one because of the promise of a cooking show, fully expecting to find the 15-minute stories contrived and made just to stretch out the show. However, I ended up liking the day-to-day doings of Jim and Sally more than the recipe segments! In fact from what I heard and have read, most of MLT's recipes sound simply vile (though to give her her due, she was offering up food for people with little money for ingredients and of course every recipe had to include PET milk :P...)

I LOVE this program! I've listen to all the episodes and most more than once! My husband thinks that some of the recipes sound good (although I have yet to make them) and I've found many of the cookbooks via flea markets, ebay, etc. Please make more of the shows available! They harken back to a much more innocent time, when people trusted each other, and cared about those less fortunate. When neighbors were truly neighbors.
