Bold Venture - Single Episodes
Ziv Corporation
Bold Venture was a transcribed syndication by Ziv Corporation, featuring 78 thirty-minute episodes. The series premiered on March 26, 1951, and was the first radio program starring Humphrey Bogart, who typically resisted live radio shows due to time constraints. However, he accepted this offer as the series was transcribed.
In Bold Venture, Humphrey Bogart plays Slate Shannon, a hotel owner and captain of a boat named the "Bold Venture." The series is set in Havana, Cuba, where Slate is always ready to rescue a friend or confront an enemy. His wife, Lauren Bacall, co-stars as Sailor Duval, while Jester Hairson plays King Moses, a calypso singer. The music was provided by David Rose and his Orchestra, with scripts written by Morton Fine and David Friedkin.
Of the 78 episodes produced, 57 are currently in circulation. So sit back, relax, and enjoy some well-produced radio from the 50s.
This recording is part of the Old Time Radio collection.

Great!

If you liked Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall in To Have and Have Not and Key Largo then you'll probably get a kick out of Bold Venture. Slate Shannon is a good guy who doesn't need a gun to back himself up. Lady Sailor is a sharp-tongued femme fatale who looks good in jeans. Lots of interesting scenarios and ruthless villains - usually greedy Americans. The repartee between Slate and Sailor can be brutal, but Slate always gets his smoochy reward at the end. King Moses' calypso summaries can get a little tedious on a binge, but then sometimes Slate gets annoyed, too....
Very Enjoyable

I'm glad Bogie finally agreed to do a radio show. He and Bacall were definitely a great team and it comes through in this show. I find myself at fault for finding some of the plots predictable, but at the time I assume they were more fresh than they would be today. Bogie's Slate Shannon is one tough SoB who only gets knocked out when its convenient for the plot. Bacall's Sailor Duvall is always ready with some quick wit or sarcastic slap of words. Definitely worth many hours of listening! Enjoy!
The End

Well I finally got to the last one, after listening to this great series spread out in conjunction with many other Radio Shows over the last few years. Slate Shannon and Sailor Duvall made a great team, just like Bogie and Bacall. Going to miss this famous duo. So long and thanks for the voyage.
