En 1794, le jeune officier Xavier de Maistre est condamné à passer six semaines dans sa chambre pour avoir pris part à un duel. Mais il n'y a pas de prison pour une imagination libre. Il entreprend un long voyage fait de souvenirs et de rêveries. Un classique de la littérature française traduit en Espéranto par Samuel Meyer en 1904.
