Ann Veronica

Read by Joy Chan

(4.4 stars; 56 reviews)

Ann Veronica was a controversial book detailing the development of a naive school girl into a "New Woman". When it was published, the Spectator described it as a "poisonous book ... capable of poisoning the minds of those who read it." Although it is unlikely to offend modern listeners in this way, this novel addresses many feminist issues that are still relevant today. (Summary by Joy Chan) (10 hr 24 min)

addition she vocalizes emotions so well . What HG Wells gives to light is that desire and possession are not love . Most of the men in this novel desire Ann Veronica and but do not truly love her . There probably are other women's rights novels from Mary Wollstonecraft's "A vindication of the rights of women" written in the late 18th or early 19th century and this novel by HG Wells . I'd like to know who wrote them and their titles . I am a male and have always supported and believed in females as being my equal in friendship or love . But today it seems the women's rights movement has changed into a misandry movement . I think we should first try to be equal friends first . And after awhile we will find if we will remain friends or not . I actually feel a small circle of mutually loving(not referring to the sex act), helpful, tolerant within reason . There is always someone to talk to, when you are melancholy , joyous and when you need someone to help you solve problems and you them help the same, and just to indulge in small talk to get your breathing pattern right if nothing else, and you to listen to one or all of them

very well written, although it felt like 2 stories in a way. I've never been a student of feminism having been born at a time when women can be just a 'free' as men. This story's glimpes at the original impulses and circumstances that spawned modern feminism gave me something to think about and wonder if they way inequality was resolved was really the best one, seeing that in some ways, women are worse off for it in significant areas of our lives. I also thought the main character was extremely selfish, not able to consider or calculate consequences that her actions may have on others, and living from an exaggerated self first perspective. Her father may be responsible for her outlook though as he was just selfish in his way, not fulfilling his duties as father, beyond the physical maintenance of his daughter. His lack of interest in her as a person in need care, love and guidance because she was born female, was disheartening and he kind of asked for the behaviour she exhibited in her rebellion.

good for thinkinking

This book was a very good read- especially for a young lady of approximately the same age. It spoke on many of the questions and musing I myself have pondered. The only thing I didn't care for was the ending. It ended up being more trashy than I was hoping. I was, however, very surprised at how open the author was about certain topics and thoughts- an especially rare thing it seems for the era in which it was written. Good effort, good read, a little disappointing at the end.

Interesting book, well read.

This is an interesting book, written at an interesting point in time, featuring a newly liberated young woman at the time of the suffragettes. It's an enjoyable book that feels very modern for the time in which it was written, which is read very ably by a young female reader with a very light Australian accent. Her accent is very soft and so sounds British at some points, making the reader seem very appropriate for the work. All in all a very interesting book that I very much enjoyed listening to.

Something A little Differerent From H. G. Wells

Ann Veronica leaves the home of her sheltered childhood to find her own path forward in London. Nothing about her upbringing has prepared this naive young girl for this drastic step. While written a century ago, the story seems surprisingly modern. I think Wells drew a an honest portrait of innocence seeking something beyond a narrow life. Very nicely read by Joy Chan

Exhausting Fun!

Joy Chan embodied Ann Veronica so perfectly that the book might have been 100% unreadable on the page. I appreciated her sincere beautiful voice especially when mountain climbing, Ann V suddenly remembers she owes a corrupt old man £40. It’s hard to face the fact that this was ever “a poisonous book” and we have to rejoice that those days are gone.

Very good reader and the story is great. Many things in it we are still strugling with to day and unbeliveable the inside of H.G.Wells in to the feminin feelings and the will with him to see the right for in same justis for men and women. Thanks for this great reading and story.

very different than expected
