The Man With Wings features a war-damaged man who wishes to fly, and a village boy, desperate for the return of his father. Set in 1947, the story unfolds in a gloomy and desolate Gloucestershire village, almost entirely populated by women and children, as the men have yet to return from the war.
Into this village comes a group of traveling nuns who set up a homestead in a deserted farmhouse. The man, back from the war and badly injured, is nursed back to health by the women in the farmhouse. He forms a bond with Mireille, one of the women, and the young boy, revealing a secret that unfolds as the play progresses.
This epic story explores themes of faith, forbidden love, and the intoxicating power of imagination, reflecting the poverty of post-war rural Britain while hinting at the beauty where the inconceivable may just possibly happen.
This recording is part of the Old Time Radio collection.
