A Mummer's Wife

(4 stars; 25 reviews)

Kate is a dress maker in the north of England who always did what was decided for her: serving those who come her way, marrying a man who is considered suitable, and living all her life "over the hills" she wants so desperately to cross. Until she decides her life are not enough for her. The novels she reads give her new ideas that change the course of her life forever.

George Moore was an Irish realistic novelist. A Mummer's Wife was his second novel. At the time, the circulating libraries were those who published the mainstream novels. They were charged with publishing moral works. They rejected A Mummer's Wife. This sparked interest among the public and it sold 14 editions by the end of the first year. This was considered so dangerous that the libraries took Moore's publisher to court over what was called The Literary Act which was meant to decide which work was considered moral. I found this book very slow. It was also dark with very little happiness

Well written , excellently read.

(4 stars)

This book is well written and presents interesting contrasts between lifestyles of its period. At the root however it is a detailed novel during which at times the reader may find themselves wanting to address the characters in warnings or admonitions. Luckily the reader is so good that listening is a pleasure. I hope this reader will grace us with more books in her voice. She is one of the best !

gripping but sad

The book must have been unusual for the times. The characters are brought out well and are not stereotyped. The reader is excellent.

lovely book

Interesting to know the backstory to the book. These kinds of things happen, but we’re never really written about.

Superb reader. Very clever wording by the author.
