Drama on 3 Rock 'n' Roll by Tom Stoppard Sunday 8 July 2007 20:00-22:30 (Radio 3) Stoppard’s play about loyalty, compromise, love and music. The play is concerned with the significance of rock and roll in the emergence of the democratic movement in Eastern Bloc Czechoslovakia between the Prague Spring of 1968 and the Velvet Revolution of 1989. In 1968, Czech student Jan returns home 'to protect rock 'n' roll' from the Soviet tanks crushing the Prague Spring. Max, a Communist don in Cambridge, watches his ideology collapse until the Velvet revolution of 1990 allows student and master to meet again. The politics and music have changed, but have the people?
