Les Miserables

Read by Orson Welles

(4.6 stars; 20 reviews)

Les Misérables is a seven-part radio series that was broadcast from July 23 to September 3, 1937, on the Mutual Network. Adapted by Orson Welles from Victor Hugo's novel, the series features Welles as Jean Valjean and marks his first job as a writer-director for radio.

This production is notable for its innovative use of first-person narration and is considered one of Welles's earliest and finest achievements on radio. The Mercury Theatre made its radio debut with this series, co-starring Martin Gabel as Javert, Alice Frost as Fantine, and Virginia Nicolson as the adult Cosette, among others.
