A motherless girl finds life very lonely living with only her dour father and two servants in the quiet New England countryside. Lonely, that is, until a neighbor begins to fill her long days and hungry mind with fascinating studies and companionship. These rich days leave an even bigger blank when his parents send him to college and eventually to university in England, determined to keep him away from young Esther. Where can she find the comfort and joy for which she is longing and searching as she grows into womanhood?

Critiques
Throughly enjoyable

Lorraine Jubilee
The theme, I think, is that Christ can give joy in the midst of adversity. Her trials, self-sacrifice and resourcefulness make a wonderful story.
Sweet and Encouraging

Good story. Got a bit long at the end.

Caregiver
Basically a good Christian story, but she makes her characters so dense stupid. I got so tired of them saying, "But I don't understand." Also one of the main characters went at his search for the others in such a ridiculous fashion, when he had been told the family had moved so the daughter could go to high school. Most anyone with any sense would have gotten a list of all the schools for older girls and gone to all of them asking for the person he wanted. It was amazing that the opposing girl was so meek.
Sweet Book full Scriptural truth

Luba - Healthy with Luba
Contentment in loneliness is the theme of this book. An eye-opening lesson about the impact of one life on another and serving God versus serving mammon are highlights too. It is a very good book, and I am eager to read/listen to the rest of Miss Warner's books.
