A family celebrates Christmas and its flaws are gently exposed by the house guest Mrs. Parry. Giles is engaged to the wealthy Daisy, yet is clearly in love with the governess Anne Denham. Things come to a head when Daisy is murdered. Who would murder her? Perhaps the governess who told her she would kill her and made it clear she wanted to exchange places with her? After all the governess ran away with a mysterious man right after the murder and was not seen again. Or did someone frame the governess? Perhaps it is Mr. Morley, Daisy's guardian, who wanted her money? Or perhaps someone else? After all, Daisy was not popular in the village. Giles, bent on saving the woman he loves, and the detective Mr. Steel go to investigate. This is a detective story in the traditional sense, but it is a host of other things. Twists and turns everywhere you look!

The reading was quite well done and perfectly audible. The story is fairly good. There are thrills and chills! My main problem is that the interwoven threads of the story became a Gordon’s knot for me when the characters all revealed secret identities two and three deep, and the whole thing turned on its head. I’ll admit I got a little lost. Still, an exciting mystery with romance. There are some mispronounced words, but not many so it was not really distracting.

Daring do's, heros and damsels in distress

At first I often find it difficult to adjust to strong US accents reading stories that take place in England, but it's worth persevering. And I thank the readers. I don't share "seventy eight"'s contempt for the story. It is what it is and from its own times and I enjoyed it.

Bad story

First, thank you to the readers of this book. My one star review isn’t a reflection on your work. Fergus Hume’s novels always stretch credulity but this one takes the cake! The characters are a dog’s breakfast of nuts, nitwits, bad liars and failed conspirators. The story starts out interestingly enough—poor Governess secretly in love with neighborhood hunk engaged to a jealous, petty and all-around unpleasant poor-but-aristocratic girl because of a deathbed promise. One of the three is murdered and it’s a conspiracy only the Marx Brothers could write. The story has lots of potential but Hume never takes the trouble to explore the possibilities. The whole thing ends up being absolutely ridiculous. Satire? Black Comedy? A take-off on cheesy Murder mysteries? I doubt it. There are other, better mystery novels on Librivox so keep looking and don’t get stuck on this one.

NEED A CAST OF CHARACTERS AND ALIASES

A good mystery which keeps the listener on his toes. Around every twist and turn (and there are many) one finds another alias. Enjoyable, especially when CM did the reading.
