Smoke is an 1867 novel by the highly acclaimed Russian writer Ivan Turgenev (1818–1883) that tells the gripping story of a secret love affair between a young betrothed Russian man and a young married Russian woman, while also delivering in the opening chapters the author's criticism of Russia and Russians of the period. powerful novel and a wonderful reader.

The book has a lengthy setting which is an inane society, followed by a narrative that's fairly self-contained. If tired of the setting, jump ahead to the narrative beginning with Chapter 7.
