Garcilaso De La Vega

Garcilaso de la Vega was a Spanish poet and soldier, born in Toledo around 1501. He lived during the reign of Charles V, when Spanish writers were engaging closely with Italian literature. His friendship with the poet Juan Boscán helped bring Italian verse forms and poetic conventions into Spanish writing. Garcilaso spent much of his adult life in royal service and was sent away from court for a time; he died in 1536 after being wounded during a military campaign in southern France. His poems circulated among friends and were published after his death, helping secure his place at the heart of Spanish Renaissance poetry.

Listeners can begin with “Égloga I,” “Égloga III,” and “Soneto XXIII,” alongside other poems gathered under titles such as Sonetos and Canciones. Across this work, Garcilaso returns to love, longing, nature, and the passage of time. His speakers often express intense feeling in a measured, graceful voice, while images of landscape give emotion a vivid setting. The balance between personal feeling and polished restraint became an influential model for later Spanish poets.
