The Valley of the Moon
Jack London
Read by Richard Kilmer (1942-2022)
The novel Valley of the Moon is a story of a working-class couple, Billy and Saxon Roberts, struggling laborers in Oakland at the Turn-of-the-Century, who left the city life behind and searched Central and Northern California for a suitable farmland to own. The book is notable for the scenes in which the proletarian hero enjoys fellowship with the artists' colony in Carmel, and he settles in the Valley of the Moon. (Summary by Wikipedia) (19 hr 7 min)

Reviews
Not my favorite Jack London book
Byron Lee Scott
I am a fan of Jack London, but my personal opinion is that it wasn't one of his better books. I know he likes the shocking violence, but it seemed to me the labor wars and boxing scenes were too much and too long. The ending was nice and I did learn a few things about human nature. Richard has a nice tone of voice for reading, though not very animated. I could forgive most of the mispronunciations, but I couldn't help wondering if the text really reads excape and warsh rather that escape and wash...made me cringe every time.
IS THIS REALLY JACK LONDON?
Avid Listener
IT is difficult to believe that London wrote this. Oh, the first half is vintage London, sordid, despairing, and full of socialistic class propoganda. But, the second half is a beautiful love story, actually containing optimism, a commodity sorely lacking in most of his works. RK does his usual fine readig.
wonderful

beautifully descriptive from San Francisco up through the delta bay area, up the Sacramento Valley, on up to Mount Shasta, the northern CA coast, the southern Oregon coast, the Rogue River Valley, Grants Pass, down over the Siskiyou Summit and ending in the Sonoma Valley (Spanish for valley of the moon)!
One to read over and over

As a California girl, this was especially fascinating with a look onto early CA politics and uinion trouble and the early days of central CA. the casual references to the earthquake brought anothwr note of realism

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was very well read. I felt like I was with Billy and Saxon throughout their journey.
