Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832), polymathe scientifique, politique et artistique qui marque l’histoire de l’Allemagne, passera soixante ans à venir à bout de son Faust, son œuvre peut-être la plus célèbre. Il la tire de la légende populaire, déjà vieille de deux siècles quand Goethe s’y attelle, de l’érudit formant un pacte avec le diable pour apaiser sa soif de savoir. Bien qu’elle soit déjà source de nombreux romans et pièces avant la naissance de Goethe, c’est son œuvre qui reste jusqu’à nos jours son itération la plus connue et la plus célébrée de cette tradition.

Terminée en 1832, moins d’un an après la mort de Goethe, la seconde partie de Faust conclut un effort d’écriture de soixante ans, après une vive attente du public allemand. Après la tragédie de Marguerite, Faust explore de nouveaux espaces magiques à la cour de son Empereur, avant de se lancer dans la quête onirique d’Hélène de Troie, jusqu’à se plonger dans la Grèce des mythes. Méphistophélès n’a pas abandonné la partie, et continue à guider les désirs de Faust, comptant sur son ambition démesurée pour gagner son pari, s’emparer de son âme…
