Great listen
John B. Stewart
The narrator refers to himself as 'A very fine voice'. And so he is. Lovely easy to listen to rendition without any major slip ups. I tried to read this years ago but didn't persist. But after I heard somewhere that he regarded it as his best work, I went to Librivox. Listening to the explanation of the conduct of the war, his personal experiences and particularly the political situation, helps you realise why the Republican Government lost to the Facists. The major split in the Republican side, which was an overflow from their main supplier and sponsor the USSR meant that there was a Civil War within a Civil War. The anti Trotskyist purge happening within Russia at the time was being transported and replicated in Spain and lead to the shattering of the Republican side. Added to by the lack of munitions, supplies and discipline amonst tbe International Brigades, meant the Government project was doomed. Really instructive as it gives an insight into his ideas that lead to '1984' and 'Animal Farm'.
An interesting and captivating listen

About non- fiction account of Orwell’s time fighting in the Spanish Civil War, it is equally informative and entertaining. There were some very amusing sections as well as a lot that I didn’t know about.
