Jack Hare is a young cowboy who was rescued from sure death by an old settler by the name of August Naab. Hare learns that Naab's ranch is a dangerous place and is challenged by cattle thieves and a corrupt rancher who is after Naab's water rights. The greatest danger Hare faces though, is over Mescal, a half-Navajo shepherdess who is already promised in marriage to Naab's first-born son. Hare must stop the marriage, but can't kill the son of his benefactor, August Naab...until a gun battle with rustlers brings the two face-to-face over drawn pistols. STORY ENVELOPES THE READER

(5 Sterne)

To tell a good story quickly is the sign of a good author. To weave the story patiently so as to make it vividly real to the reader is the sign of a great author.

Interesting

Richard did a great job reading such a long book! His voice gets a little hoarse sounding at times but mine would too reading that long. I thought the story line was good although i occasionally glazed over at Zane's wordy descriptions. I do appreciate that Zane knew how to make a story last over several years of time unlike modern writers who can't seem to make a story last three weeks!

The only Zane Grey book I had read before this one was Betty Zane, and I loved that one. I realy enjoyed this one as well. The plot was somewhat predictable, but then I don't like bad surprises in stories anyway. at the same time, there was plenty going on to keep the story going.

Enjoyable

Good story, and a decent reading. However, there is no "X" in escape. Once I noticed the reader saying "excape" my ears hooked on to it, and it nearly drove me crazy. That being said it was overall a very good job.

Lengthy but good story

A great narration by Richard Kilmer. A classic Zane Grey story chucked full of vivid descriptions of the landscape of the Utah desert country.

Will put you to sleep.

This reader is great if you have trouble sleeping. He reads everything as if he cheerishes every word. It sounds like he really enjoys the scenery. If he would describe say someone getting his head smashed in by an axe then youd come out of it thinking well.. how charming.
