When the Inter-Planetary Corporation's (IPC) crack liner “IPV Arcturus” took off on a routine flight to Mars, it turned out to be the beginning of a unexpected and long voyage. There had been too many reports of errors in ship's flight positions from the Check Stations and brilliant physicist Dr. Percival (“Steve”) Stevens is aboard the Arcturus on a fact-finding mission to find out what's really happening, and hopefully save the honor of the brave pilots of the space-liner Arcturus from the desk-jockeys' in the Check Stations implications of imprecision - the nastiest insult you could cast at a ships pilot. He and the pilots are right, it was the Check Stations that were out of position, not the ships. Great classic SciFi story, reminded me of the classic series, at Saturday morning pictures kids only! Well written in the 'Docs' wonderfully imaginative style death rays, romance and adventure. Mark Nelson is beyond excellent, wonderful vocal interpretation, the most amazing timing, believe me the pauses make the story almost demand attention. Listen to it if you like classic SciFi this is an essential!

If you are going to get all technical about how possible something is or is not...then skip this book, it will drive you mental. Mark Nelson does an outstanding job as always! This tale is more of a mash up of Whato Jeeves, Star Trek and MacGyver. And to be honest, the relationship between leading man and woman is nothing short of annoying at times... It is not the best sci-fi of the era but it's a bit of a laugh at times. Give it a go, you can always stop if it's not for you!

Historical Sci Fi is interesting to me, on many levels. This story is no exception. The reader is excellent, and brings this work to life. Do remember, however, that this work is a product of its times, and the author, while imaginative, and very inventive, projects some quaint attitudes, especially towards women, which we find ludicrous today. However, it might have been considered progressive back then. A bit paternalistic, but downright sweet nonetheless, it harkens back to more innocent times. This was initially published in 1947. Keep it in historical perspective, and don't let any of that ruin a good story for you. And a good story this is, too. I really, really liked it. The aliens are truly alien, and "Doc" Smith's descriptions of the beings who inhabit the planets, (and their moons) in our solar system, make those beings, and their societies, seem real. The description of technology is interesting, because what we have now went in an entirely different direction. What Smith describes as a "Computer" is very different from what we would consider a computer to be. Replete with vacuum tubes,spherical space ships, and "cool cat" scientists who talk like jazz musicians, this story has it all. (I love it.) EE (Doc) Smith influenced some of our modern greats, George Lucas being one of them. So, tune in, and listen on, Spacehounds, It's all X!

This book reminds me of the way Star Wars plots work. You have one story line here, and then you have another story line, and then later they weave together. A group of nasty six legged creatures who hates humans and all the many variants of them (in this book, there are quite a few) is running around attacking and destroying them. But when the Spacehounds come together, nothing can stop them! It's a great book; I had lots of fun listening to it. Great reader, as usual. :-) Enjoy!

I'm not fond of trashing peoples work, but this book is very average. It feels quite outdated and unnecessarily long. I feel mean for saying that, but I guess a review is pointless if not honest. Mark Nelson does salvage the story to some extent though. Such a great reader. Thank you to Mark and all the other fantastic readers for taking the time to keep us entertained. Great work guys 👍

the plot is overcomplicated, physics is overscrewed, often frustrating. nevertheless the narrator is doing a good job
