The Rory Gallagher Story Gary Moore pays tribute to blues-inspired rock guitarist Rory Gallagher, who died on 14 June 1995, aged 47. Featuring rare archive recordings, including a previously unaired demo from the 1960s. Producer: Steve Groves Sat 16th Apr 2005 21:30 on BBC Radio 2 Rory Gallagher (2 March 1948 14 June 1995) was an Irish blues/rock guitarist Born in Ballyshannon, County Donegal, Ireland, he grew up in Cork City in the south of the country. He is best known for his solo albums, and for his tenure in the band Taste during the late 60s. Rory Gallagher's albums sold in excess of 30 million copies worldwide. Gallagher was 47 when he died from an infection caught after a liver transplant operation. The programme includes rarely-heard archive recordings of Rory himself as well as the first airing of a snatch of a demo from the 60s as Rory tried to break out of his Irish showband days. As well as presenter Gary Moore discussing his early days playing on the same bills as Rory in Belfast, contributors include Queen's Brian May who reveals how he copied Rorys guitar sound and The Smiths Johnny Marr who says he took a day off school to play along with one of Rorys albums.
