These dramatizations of the weekly Jungle Jim comic strip has a serious problem. The episodes are often rather unbearably padded out so that the show matches the action in the comic strip. Also, unfortunate for those who wish to be completists, the first 20 or so episodes are the worst, with a bad actor as the brutish french-canadian villain. But those first 20 episodes also introduce us to Shanghai Lil, who starts out as the lead villain, but evolves into a bad girl secret agent who can think miles ahead of all the characters (including the somewhat lunkheaded Jim and the lunkheaded supervillain of episodes 20-50, Derek Lugar). Lil is the best thing in this run of shows, as the role comes across as a femme fatale, as played by Eve Arden. The shows where she is matching "wits" against the head of the Purple Triangle gang are probably the best. Shows 55-90 evolve into a rather boring excursion into the Burma jungle, where Jim, Lil, and a couple of colorless subsidiary characters, do battle against jewel smugglers. The number of escapes, recaptures and reversals of fortune in this one approach idiocy. The last episodes in this set begin a new arc of stories which extend on to set 2. In this arc, Jim and Lil have evolved into a Nick and Nora couple in pursuit of high adventure and the jewels of Genghis Khan. Although you can't tell it from the shows in this set, this new arc is superior to what's gone before,

I don't agree with the other reviewer as only giving this 2 stars. while it isn't the best old radio show I have ever heard, this is great stuff and well worth a listen
