At a time when the detective story was gaining in popularity, the hero was almost always male. In this story, Dudie Dunne is assisted by his Italian friend, Cad Metti. Dressed as a boy, she slips by unnoticed. A natural, she can pass in high society or the New York slums. She is perfect for the job of tracking down a gang of Italian-Americans. The Old Sleuth was a quarterly detective magazine published from 1895 til 1905. - Summary by Lynne T (3 hr 11 min)

We do hear more about Oscar than Cad, but I think she's more than a sidekick. She saves his bacon and is a bit ahead of the game. If you're looking for Miss Scarlet and the Duke, this isn't it. But it's a nice short book and the readers do a good job.

From the title one would expect the female detective to take center stage, instead she is only the clever sidekick.
