11. " The Blues Revival"

The Blues 11. " The Blues Revival" 03 12 05 CBC Radio 11. "The Blues Revival" Locale: Austin, Texas At the start of the 1980s, the future of the blues seemed as bleak as the decade just passed. But the emergence of a pair of young bluesmen, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Robert Cray, the re-birth of an old one, Albert Collins, and the introduction of the compact disc fueled a blues revival that carried the genre through the '80s and beyond. Vaughan and other white blues acts made Texas the state where blues thrived, nurturing artists like Vaughan's brother Jimmie and his band The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Lou Ann Barton, Sue Foley, Marcia Ball, and Rod Piazza and The Mighty Flyers. Harmonica player Kim Wilson of The Fabulous Thunderbirds provides the musical close.
This recording is part of the Old Time Radio collection.

story of the 1980s blues revival

Buddy Guy noted how the blues scene migrated from Chicago to Austin, Texas. This radio program does an excellent job of chronicling the how's and why's of this migration. In addition to the artists mentioned in the description of this upload, Steve Miller demonstrates different blues guitar styles with a focus on defining Texas blues guitar. Clifford Antone recalls a number of anecdotes. Highly recommended for fans of blues, music and guitar. One historical note-the blues revival of the 1980's was what might be called the 3 legged stool supporting blues musicians. In addition to venues (which this program captures) the 3 legged stool also includes blues radio programs and local blues societies. Neither the blues radio programs (primarily non commercial fm stations) and the blues societies weren't as prevalent in the 1970's which had diminished opportunities for blues musicians.
