Fergus Hume
Two former school friends, now both military men, meet again and discover both are trying to lose themselves to public gaze. Dick West has inherited the family estate, but is out of favor. "The Red Window" was used during periods of civil unrest to warn cavaliers of danger. Now, West awaits a message in the red window from his cousin, to say his grandfather has relented and forgiven him - but a handkerchief around the old man's neck complicates matters. - Summary by Lynne Thompson (8 hr 24 min)

Josembie was very difficult to understand to say the least! I got about every 5th word! I hit "rewind" a lot. Francoise was better but I still had trouble understanding about 20% of her words. Although many languages sound nice I feel that volunteers should only read in their native language. Otherwise, listeners tend to devote more time to comprehension instead of just enjoying the story. Of course, readers should also pronounce at least 98% of the words properly & use an appropriate tone and speed. Librivox isn't directly involved with this app so we must email Librivox to request that chapters/books be re-recorded. The story is a pretty straightforward mystery. There aren't many twists or surprises so it's not thrilling. However, it is still an enjoyable read. I liked many of the characters & loved that the good ones ended up happy while the bad ones didn't. I'm not into corporal punishment but I admit that I smiled when "Judas" got his ass whipped!

I wish one of my favorite narrators would take this on as a solo! It's been a long time since I have attempted a multi - narrator book. Still had to skip chapters. Got lost with some of the characters. Lots of twists and turns.

This is a good story and easy to listen to except for one chapter.

AVID READER
A well conceived whodunnit. Hume is good at complicated plots, but his endings are sometimes blah. No one likes multiple readers, but even the most difficult one was understandable after a bit of concentration.
Me
it's a good book, but some chapters are very poorly read. I can't complain as it is free after all, but mispronunciation is only one facet of the incompetence shown.

I have no desire to hurt anyone's feelings, but I gave up on this because it was such a mind numbing chore trying to understanding the second reader.
hang in there...it is very worth it. the author really is a master story teller!
