Adventure of a Lifetime

(5 Sterne)

The author toured the California gold fields, not to seeking fortune, but an adventure. He provides a great first-hand account of life in early days of the state of California. The reader does an excellent job. Her calm, consistent delivery makes this an audiobook that I've listened to several times.

This non-fiction account, of the California gold mines, is very, very similar to R. M. Ballantyne's fictional book, "The Golden Dream". I actually enjoyed hearing parallel elements. As with a good deal of the literature of the times, one has to disregard the usual derogatory terms and prejudices, as well as the treatment of some animals, to enjoy the anecdotes and insights, some of which are suprisingly forward thinking. it also amazes me how many things have changed so little. Thank you, again, to Sue, for another wonderful reading.

The golden era

Love anything related to the gold rush era, really enjoyed this. I get a confused image in my head when a female narrator is reading a male dominated story but I guess that's just my imagination lol. Very well read :)

Informative

(5 Sterne)

I enjoyed the book, the first 22 chapters were the best, then it sort of got boring. But I learned a great deal about the past.
