Arthur Kipps, an orphaned draper’s assistant of humble means, unexpectedly inherits a large sum of money and that is when all his troubles begin. Wanting to marry above his social class, he has to learn how to lead a genteel life, but that is too much for him. You would think that his decision to revert to Ann, his boyhood love, would solve his problems and bring him back to earth and contentment. But even now the consequences of being wealthy are not easy to live with.

A poignant tale about ambition and social class in England in the early 20th century by H.G. Wells, a master of this genre, who drew on features of his own life to provide some of the material (Summary by Anthony) (11 hr 55 min)

Kudos to Anthony Ogus

Great reading of a story I loved. Wells not only conjured futuristic visions, he saw the reality of social and economic repression. His observations are sadly as true today as then. Plus H.G. was a far more sensual and romantic person than I thought. As in Mr. Lewisham, his love 'scenes' are very tender and real.

Classic tale of class and money

(5 Sterne)

Classic tale of the absurdity of a society consisting of the filthy, filthy rich who don't work and the dirt poor who do. An obvious better way? Democracy, equal education and opportunity, and a strong, prosperous middle class maintained on the principles of. capitalism.

Well read by Anthony Ogus

Anthony Ogus is a very good reader and really made this story come all alive. A meaningful well written book by one of my favourite authors, H. G Wells

Orwell's mother was a cook/housekeeper for a famous couple active in the Bloomsbury cultural scene during the Edwardian period, and his father was a cricketeer who kept a shop, so he certainly knows his topic. I was happy that Artie and Anne finally found happiness after many trials. Anthony Ogus was superb.
