engrossing, moving account

Plain spoken, well read, authentic account of life in the south among captive slaves before and during the civil war by a self educated slave who survived to become a formally educated, ordained minister after the war.

A portrait of antebellum slavery

The stories within are often dreadful but also inspiring and sometimes humorous. Some readers shine more than others but they were all fairly clear and easy to listen to.
