A Visit to the Holy Land, Egypt, and Italy
Gelesen von Sibella Denton
Ida Laura Pfeiffer
Ida Pfeiffer travelled alone in an era when women didn't travel. She went first on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, then went on to Egypt and Italy. Understanding the difficulties a woman would face travelling alone and on a budget, she made a will before she left. Go she did, however; and upon her return she wrote this book. She used the proceeds to finance her next trip - six months in Iceland. (Summary by Sibella Denton) (11 hr 4 min)

Wonderful!

This woman was 45. Her husband died, both her sons were grown and settled, and when her mother died, she inherited a bit. She was interested in the Holy Land since girlhood. So, she set off; how brave! She slept on stones sometimes. Her courage, fortitude, faith and sense of adventure left me humbled. She was an excellent diarist, who wrote word pictures.

This is rather an outstanding travel log. Consider the time it was written in and be aware there is a bit of religious fervor. I think the author is remarkable for endeavoring to make this trip. Seems like it was rough at times but she comes off as a good sport. I'd recommend.
