Most interesting and amazing story.

(5 Sterne)

I agree with the other reviewers that the author and the reader have both produced outstanding results. I wasn't sure the story would keep my interest with all the focus on the printing business. I took a few breaks along the way because it is a very long story and the description of cruel child labor affected me. But before I was less than one fourth of the way through, I really got into the story and stayed up almost all night listening to it. Edward's relationship with his father is an important part of the story, sad but also touching, and brought out understanding of why both characters were the way they were. I previously enjoyed Bennett's two stories "The Card" and "Buried Alive" and was absolutely blown away by the cleverness of the second one. Those two stories had quite a bit of humor to them, whereas this one is intensely serious. I liked it very much.

COMPELLING

AB is a masterful storyteller, but this one surpasses his others. The synopsis calls it a "coming of age," but that description is lame. Truly, we experience Edwin's awkward move from childhood to adolescent. His timid embarkation on the sea of love and his first kiss are surely familiar to me. Even more compelling, though, is his dealing with the dementia of an aging parents, something all too familiar to my generation. Then, the poignant rekindling of his first love serves as a fitting end to this book and as a springboard to the rest of his life. I defy anyone to encounter a more realistic character in all of fiction. Simon Evers deserves much credit for this realism.

Excellent!

This is the first of a four book series on the Clayhanger Family and it’s one of the best book one could read. Arnold Bennett can write a study in human character that surpasses many of his contemporaries back in his day. I’ve read the three other books in the series but somehow missed this one. I’m so happy I found it and that it’s narrated by Simon Evers. Mr. Ever's narration is flawless and he represents all the characters so very well. Exceptional book and exceptional narrator!

Excellent

Brilliant story by AB...I had read Hilda Lessways before I read this not realising it was the first part of the trilogy but it didn't in any way ruin the story in fact it probably made me enjoy it even more.Im currently watching the Clayhanger series that BBC made in the 70s based on the books and its fantastic also I'd recommend it to anyone who loves the books. Simon Evers is the perfect reader

I often listen to books only because Simon Evers is the reader. As good as ever on this delightful book. Im looking forward to the second installment. The characters wont stay in the story.

This author's langiage is witty, yet the story is nor at all a funny one. It is, however, utterly gripping. highly recommended

An interesting story, I enjoyed hearing about Edwin caring for his father with dementia, also of the poverty and child labor and workers un rest.
