Clara Lu n Em 15 Eps

(11 Episodes, 1 interview, 1 theme song & 2 INC Eps with interesting info) "Clara Lu 'n' Em" During the late evening of Tuesday, January 27, 1931 (10:30 pm), "Clara Lu 'n' Em" made radio-broadcasting-history. when it hit the NBC Blue Network airwaves as, what appears to be, the first-ever soap opera. "Clara Lu 'n' Em" aired throughout the 30s & early 40s on the NBC Blue Network & CBS, until, in 1945 it reached syndication heaven. Colgate-Palmolive-Peet, impressed with the program, thought it worth-while to sponsor, but did not like the current late night time-slot it was placed in. Many believe February 15, 1932 to be the first airdate, rather that Jan 27/31. In actuality, Feb 15/32 was the day the show moved from the 10:30 pm, Tuesday thru Saturday time-slot, to the morning time slot, where it stayed for many years to come â with, you guessed it â Colgate-Palmolive-Peet as their sponsor. This Old Time Radio soap opera is the story of the lives of three yappy housewives (Clara Roach, Lu Casey, & Emma Krueger) who gathered together on a daily basis, to share caffeine, recipes and the latest news (GOSSIP!). "Clara Lu 'n' Em" was actually created as a joke script. On a whim, 3 sorority sisters at Northwestern University, had written a skit telling the story of 3 gossipy friends. These three University 'sisters' (Louise Starkey, Isobel Carothers & Helen King) approached WGN radio in Chicago with a written script, agreeing to do their first radio broadcasts for free. This was a great deal for 'Super Suds' the local radio sponsor, as 'Super Suds' then became known as the first 'soap product' - to sponsor the 1st 'network daytime program' - or the first 'Soap Opera.' * And, as it is 'said' - the rest is broadcast history.
