“I thought it was you I saw coming up the hill,” she said, stretching out her hand.

He stopped and shook it; the touch of his big, firm fingers made her tremble. His hand was massive and hard as if it were hewn of stone. She looked up at him and smiled.

“Isn’t it cold?” she said. It is terrible to be desirous of saying all sorts of passionate things, while convention debars you from any but the most commonplace. (Excerpts from chapter 1.) (11 hr 8 min)

Reviews

Very Enjoyable. The reader's narrating was visceral.

It no doubt will ring many bells with a good percentage of listeners. The realisation that love and relationships are really never up to our expectations. Because we simply do not accept that expectations that have basis on changing another human being simply cannot be fulfilled. And most importantly that the feeling is always mutual, even if often one party is quite prepared to oversee everything and just carry on while the other insists in making their feelings know. All is so well captured in this book. And the narrator is fantastic!

love overload

(3 stars)

The woman was seeking love in absurd amounts. It became monotonous. But the reader was really great to listen to!

Another great reading!

Excellent reading. It's incredible how Maugham captures the feminine soul.

Mispronunciation

(3 stars)

"Lowering" pronounced like , ow, or glowering. I wish the editors and readers were better read or educated.

Revealing study of marital relations

(5 stars)

Great reader and an intimate revelation of human relations by the author.
