The Letters of Jane Austen

Read by Elizabeth Klett

(4.7 stars; 84 reviews)

This recording includes a selection of Jane Austen's letters, edited by Susan Coolidge and chosen from the collection of Austen's great-nephew, Edward, Lord Brabourne. The letters are mostly addressed to Austen's sister Cassandra, with whom she was very close. There are also some letters written to two of her nieces, Anna Austen Lefroy and Fanny Knight. They include some references to her published work, including Sense and Sensibility (abbreviated "S and S"), Pride and Prejudice (also called First Impressions, or P and P), Mansfield Park ("MP") and Emma. They are also replete with details about her family life, including the extended families and careers of her brothers, James, Edward, Frank, Henry, and Charles. Outstanding Reading

(5 stars)

Elizabeth Klett is one of the premiere talents of Librivox, and we're very fortunate to have her volunteer her time and talent. Always a superb reader, this venture finds her in top form. About the letters: I, of course, haven't listened to all of them--that would be a bit like insisting someone listen to all of Mozart's compositions before making a judgement of him as a composer. The letters are a peek into Austen's world, which was as the preface writer states "an uneventful one." Probably, more often than not, that's a good thing. Moreover, it doesn't mean that she lived a boring one. Indeed, I was surprised by how agreeable life was toward her, and her enjoyment of it. Also of note: Today, few people write as well as the author of the preface.

I love Jane—and Elizabeth Klett!

Beautiful reading by EK! I love Jane Austen's wit, sharper here because so much of it is directed at the neighbors and acquaintances she shares with her sister and (later) nieces. I laughed out loud several times. I especially love seeing her mature and her priorities shift as she gets older. Beautiful ending with Cassandra's letters.
