Eben Holden - A Tale of the North Country
Irving Bacheller
Read by Roger Melin
Eben Holden - A Tale of the North Country. Having lost both parents and his home in northern Vermont, orphan Willie Brower is taken in by Eben Holden, "Uncle Eb" who transports him westward to save him from being sent to an orphanage. Through the Adirondacks and into the St. Lawrence valley they travel. Eben is kind, happy, and loves to tell stories to the youngster, many of which were to shape the life and ideals of Willie during his life.
This story follows Willie as a young orphan, later as a journalist, and finally as a soldier who enlists in the army at the outset of the American Civil War. The book was immensely popular when it was published in 1900 and the years to follow, as the characters were all drawn from people who the author had known himself. Reviews
Very good book and superb reader.
Runcible
Eben Holden is one of those stories that starts out slowly and gradually builds up momentum. Folksy in the best sense of the word, it has moments of sorrow, joy laughter and wistfulness, much like real life. Roger Malin is an expert, gifted reader who narrates this book with just the right amount of understated emotion to let the story unfold in the listener's mind.
Great reading of a classic American tale
ListeninginChicago
I second the previous reviews. Roger does a great job with this book. The tale is classic Americana and tells of a young man coming of age in the 1840s and 1850s. All the hopes and dreams and angst and disappointment really caught me up in the story.
SERENDIPITY
AVID READER
A wonderful reading of a master diarist. How sad that so many people never experience good times as trailblazers. The "good ol' days" may never have been so good as we remember, but we are fortunate to believe that they were.

A LibriVox Listener
A really good book to listen to. Roger Melin is such an excellent reader that it makes the story more interesting to listen to and it's hard to stop at any spot in the story.
Good Simple Story

Roger Melin is my favorite reader. This book reminds me of the writing of Wendell Berry, so if you are a fan of his, I think you will like this book.
Splendid!
