I am very glad I didn't let such poor ratings dissuade me from giving this audiobook a chance! There are 16 books related to and containing the stories of the Scarlet Pimpernel, everyone's favorite dandy hero, and it's wonderful to have access to more of them! This book was very interesting, focusing on the setting of the book series, painting an interesting world in which the scarlet pimpernel must cleverly work through. The reader does a mostly clear rendering(far out shining many amateur readers here where background noises, echoes, and interference plague many recordings) and graciously does it solo. To tend to the complaints: Indeed the reader does not manage the French as well as the other reader, Ms.Savage(another reader), but I felt the effort was put forth. The fast pace reading seems to be only present in Prologue part I, and the moments of repetition only seem to occur at some points early in the book. Overall I felt the reader did quite well.

"I will Repay" is another great Scarlet pimpernel tale. Annie is a fast reader which makes the prologue; therefore, extremely difficult to understand if you are from the South, like me, where we talk much slower. You can tell that she is trying to slow herself down as she reads further into the book. Her voice gets hoarse a few times and there are some repitious phrases, like she forgot where she stopped but overall, the story is so great that it is still worth listening to. I am reminded that we are not professionals here but volunteers trying to help others. Thank you, Annie for the effort.

it's not as professional as Karen Savage, but it is well read. you can adjust the reading speed if ot bothers you. my only issue was a slight background noise, tolerable even unnoticed when played through the phones speakers, but irritating when using my headphones.

The story was Baroness Orzcy's usual formula but the historical parts were interesting. However, it was hard to listen to because of the reader's mispronunciation of French words and names. We can't expect all readers to know French pronunciation but some of her interpretations were so ludicrous that it was a struggle to keep reading.

Excellent novel! Baroness Orczy reveals the true horror of life for both the elite and the poor during the 'Reign of Terror' that was the first year of the French Revolution. Set within this historical backdrop is a story of romance that must overcome a deep commitment for revenge. There is great depth in the writing and the main characters are developed in quite detail and with many layers. Interestingly, the Scarlet Pimpernel is not the main focus this time, but this works well within the overall storyline. The narrator sets off in the Preface like a greyhound out of its box. But, by the opening chapter, she settles into a more respectable canter (to really mix my metaphors) and from there on does a good job. Now, on to the next SP novel. Nice!

I agree with other reviews that the reader does not equal the skill of Karen Savage but the story follows the Scarlett Pimpernel and is a good one, not to be missed. Librivox allows you to adjust the speed of the reader, menu at top right, it helps to slow this reader down! This reading is far far better than the awful books read in single chapters by different readers, those books are truly difficult to finish.
