The Great Gildersleeve
Gildy Goes on a Diet
by
Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve, known as Gildy, is a blustery but good-hearted bachelor whose life in the town of Summerfield revolves around family, friends, and local affairs. He shares his home with his niece Marjorie and nephew Leroy, whose youthful schemes and sharp observations often unsettle his plans.
The series grew out of Gildersleeve’s appearances on Fibber McGee and Molly and follows him as he navigates domestic responsibilities and community life. Episodes mix family comedy with the small triumphs and embarrassments of a man who likes to think he is in charge. His work as Summerfield’s water commissioner also brings him into contact with the town’s civic life.
Harold Peary’s distinctive performance gives Gildy a booming voice, comic self-importance, and an underlying warmth. The show’s humor comes from lively character relationships and Gildersleeve’s confident attempts to manage situations that rarely go quite as he expects.
