The Rookie

Read by Scott Sigler

(4.8 stars; 603 reviews)

Set in a lethal pro football league 700 years in the future, THE ROOKIE is a story that combines the intense gridiron action of “The Blindside” with the space opera style of “Star Wars” and the criminal underworld of “The Godfather.”

Aliens and humans alike play positions based on physiology, creating receivers that jump 25 feet into the air, linemen that bench-press 1,200 pounds, and linebackers that literally want to eat you. Organized crime runs every franchise, games are fixed and rival players are assassinated.

Follow the story of Quentin Barnes, a 19-year-old quarterback prodigy that has been raised all his life to hate, and kill, those aliens. Quentin must deal with his racism and learn to lead, or he’ll wind up just another stat in the column marked “killed on the field.”

I debated listening to this book for about six months after reading the description. I thought, aliens playing football I don't know about this....... Trust me this series is awesome, I got about halfway through the first episode and I was hooked. if you are wondering if you should read this or not just shucking do it...... You won't regret it......

Beyond Words

I am not a sports fan by any stretch of the imagination. But Scott has me as a life long fan of his GFL. I have no words to explain why. I am dumbfounded how he has done it.

Very entertaining

I've enjoyed all of Scott's novels, both for the good stories and the way his dramatic readings make the characters come alive.

Great book, it would be a 5 star book if the commercials wasn't so loud.

This is a fantastic audiobook! Sigler is a great reader. With sound effects and additional processing, this is more like a dramatization. In fact, compared to the “professionally produced” dramatization available from Audible, this is WAAAAAY better! Sigler is able to grasp subtle nuances that professional actors couldn’t get. If you’re familiar with Sigler’s other work, you’ll know he’s really into “lots and lots of violence”. He definitely has a twisted sense of humor that he is able to convey in a delightful way. Other readers are far to grim and serious and the humor is often missed or just feels unnatural. He also has a moral message about how ridiculous racism is. It was probably inspired by Isis or the Taliban but could just as easily apply to the American right. Also, you don’t have to be into grid iron football to appreciate this book. I personally hate football but love the GFL!

pleasantly surprised

I was wondering wether to listen to this one or not. When I did it was actually better than I thought. yes there are some chliches you'll recognize. but Scott siglers telling of them is brilliant. and even if your not a fan of American football (i'm English!) then don't worry as he does a great job of describing what's going on! will be looking for the rest! (partly because I'm curious if Steve rickyberg and A.B. kovacs will appear in them!) if you know about his work you will understand that last comment!
