The Shadow Over Innsmouth

Rumours abound of sinister goings-on in the ancient Massachusetts seaport of Innsmouth. The once prosperous town, which has fallen into a state of decrepitude and decay, is a stopover destination for Robert Olmstead, a young historian on a tour of the region. Despite hearing ominous tales of the town and its grotesque inhabitants, Olmstead feels compelled to explore Innsmouth. He finds the place almost deserted, except for a few inhospitable locals with strange, unblinking eyes - the so-called, Innsmouth Look. He meets the town drunk, Zadok Allen, who tells him the terrifying history of the town, about Devil Reef and mutant humanoids, sea gods, gold, and human sacrifice.

The deranged ramblings of a madman? As night falls on Innsmouth, Olmstead soon has cause to wonder.

The Shadow Over Innsmouth (1931) is an integral part of what has become known as H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos. The novella was published in 1935, and at some 26,000 words, is one of the author's longest works.

The podcast is read by Mike Bennett, author of Underwood and Flinch.

The Shadow over Innsmouth

(5 stars)

This is one of the best readings I have heard on Librivox as of yet. Mr. Bennet took the time to give life, personality and even a specific voice to each character in the story. The music provided by mr. Beard is a fine accompaniment to the somber melancholy of Lovecraft's work. This kept my attention rapt throughout the course of a long work day. Very well done.

great story, gripping reading

Any fans of horror will really enjoy Innsmouth. This is a superb text where Lovecraft builds atmosphere and mystery throughout. The language might be a little verbose for some tastes but trust me, stick with it. The description of the town is so vivid, you can clearly picture the map with the narrator. The writing is complemented by a dramatic reading with breaths and emphasis on all the right beats. I will definitely go back to hear more of Mike.

Immersion matters.

This reader knows what it takes to make a truly impressive audio book. From a simple musical score and proper audio recording, to outstanding vocal acting, this version is sure to make you regret listening with the lights off.

Superbly Read Story

I had heard Richard Coyles excellent reading of this book on the radio which I had loved. So I was a little apprehensive about hearing a different reading of it. I needn't have been. Mike Bennett has done a superb job of bringing this unusual and intricately descriptive story to live, with a pace and measure of restrained intensity that is completely appropriate to the text. Well done and thankyou to you Mike. For me this book is an absolute classic of gothic horror to match any of the greats that we are more familiar with.

Lovecraft would be proud

Wow! I was blown away by this reading. Mike Bennett is outstanding and I've never heard Lovecraft captured in such a way. As an enormous Lovecraft fan I was delighted by the music, voices and the atmosphere the narrator was able to create in such an immersive way.

Brilliant! First time I have listened to an audio book and was not disappointed. listened to it everywhere. including on the bus and missed my stop! Mike Bennett was great and the talk with Zadock scared the life out of me! Great and surprising ending! Can't wait to listen to more of these!

Excellent job Mike. Him reading rivals that of Morgan Freeman narrating. Obvious he loves what he does and thoroughly enjoys going beyond just reading by adding character to the characters. Well done. This is how Lovecraft should be read
